From Tuesday 05 March 2013
To Sunday 10 March 2013

Some of the top young ski racers in the country and world will converge upon the Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort when it hosts the Western Region Junior Championships this Tuesday through Sunday.

About 280 athletes will be competing in two classifications — U18 (ages 16 and 17) and U21 (ages 18, 19 and 20).

"The top racers will earn spots at the U.S. National Championships," said Kari Johnson, Mission Ridge Ski Team development director. "They are coming from all regions of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association — the East, Rocky Mountains, Central Northern, Far West, Pacific Northwest, Intermountain, and Alaska.  We also have racers from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Italy and Eritrea."

With all the athletes in town — many accompanied by coaches and family members — the six-day event is expected to pump about $375,000 into the local economy, Mission Ridge Ski Team officials say. The Coast Wenatchee Center Hotel is serving as event headquarters.

A crew of 80 volunteers anticipates putting in 4,000 hours of work before, during and after the event.

The 50-member Pacific Northwest Ski Association team will feature 13 Mission Ridge Ski Team athletes. They include (women) Lindsay Ahmann, Taylor Bauernfeind, Hannah Bodily, Tessa Alger, Brittney Knox and Mattie Wise; and (men) Cai Yamamoto, Austin Dean, Danny O'Neal, Andrew Black, Max Tobler, Paul Meyer and Ben Holmberg.

The schedule calls for women's and men's super-G races Tuesday and Wednesday; women's giant slalom races and men's slalom races on Thursday and Friday; and women's slalom races and men's giant slalom races on Saturday and Sunday.

The super-G and giant slalom races will be held on the resort's Skookum Run; the slalom races will be held on either the Tumwater or Chak Chak runs. The public is welcomed to watch the action.
