The Leavenworth Winter Sports Club announces the cancelation of the annual Hog Loppet scheduled for February 22, 2014. The event is a 30Km Nordic ski trek over scenic and mountainous backcountry terrain from the summit of the Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort to Blewett Pass.
The Leavenworth Winter Sports Club kept their fingers crossed as the unseasonably dry and low snow winter started to change course and snow began to arrive in the Cascade Mountains. With what started as threatening the event due to low snow has turned out to be an abundant unstable snowpack and high avalanche danger.
“We have been in touch with the Mission Ridge Ski Patrol and forecasters at the Northwest Avalanche Center as the winter storm cycle continued to develop,” says Mark Milliette, General Manager of the Winter Sports Club. “The most recent observations and forecasts have brought about the decision to cancel the event due to safety concerns for our participants, support organizations and employees. The continued storm activity and avalanche danger into next week doesn’t give us the window needed to safely build the groomed road from Blewett Pass to outside Mission Ridge and host a safe event. We share the disappointment felt by all those that planned to participate and support the event,” added Milliette.
Formed in 1928, the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club has a tradition of facilitating winter recreation in the Leavenworth area. The Winter Sports Club is a non-profit 501c4 that manages 26Km of Nordic ski trails and the Leavenworth Ski Hill.
