'Swampabilly blues" at the Ridge

junkyardjane275Next to step up to the KOHO 101.1 Mission Ridge Mountain Music Festival stage this Saturday night is none other than Junkyard Jane, that ol' "swampabilly" band of yore. The Tacoma group's sound of blues, country, rock, Americana, funk and folk is best described as a giant gumbo served in big portions. Here's a taste of them playing "I Can't Let Go." The band dates back to 1997. Founding members Billy Stoops and Leanne Trevalyan had worked together on occasion and had been doing their own projects — The Generators and Cobalt Hook — when they decided to form Junkyard Jane. "I'm a southern boy basically," Stoops told BluesNotes in an interview. "I have a strong influence of southern music but more from soul music, and I've always been influenced by the New Orleans kind of grooves, R&B and a lot of Texas." Added Trevalyan: "A lot of people think we are from the South or New Orleans, and we are from the Northwest. That shocks some people." Junkyard Jane will perform from 6:45 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Hampton Lodge at Mission Ridge.

Alternate-Country at the Ridge

The Ridge getting a dose of alt-country

A chunk of rock ‘n’ roll and a slice of Americana slides into Mission Ridge on Saturday when Massy Ferguson hits the stage in Hampton Lodge as part of the Mountain Music Festival.mzi.fsdreoqj.170x170-75
The band, a centerpiece of Seattle’s roots-rock scene, is best known as the archetypal bar band, with influences ranging from Thin Lizzy to Bruce Springsteen and anything Southern rock.

Massy Ferguson’s own description? Try “twang rock.”

"You know only good things can come from a band that named itself after a farm-equipment company.” writes The Seattle Weekly's Brian Barr. “Their songs are steeped in the classic Americana of the Blasters, the Jayhawks, and the Backsliders. Rich with imagery of highways, truck-stop coffee, whiskey, road-weariness, and bad motels …”

Ethan Anderson and Adam Monda started Massy Ferguson in 2006 as a duo. Their first gig? Playing at the Mukilteo Farmers Market in Mukilteo. Their reward? A fruit basket.

Now that's Americana.

Just don't expect any acoustic sets on Saturday night.

"I don't have a problem with anybody saying we're a good bar band," Anderson says. "Some bands take that as a negative. I think of it as a positive thing."

Their 2010 album, “Hard Water,” includes the track, “Wenatchee Eyes.” It’s about a girl from, well, Wenatchee.

We have a feeling that’s gonna get played some at Mission.
