Better late than never! We finally got our first major snowfall of November yesterday, with 4 inches of new snow overnight on the upper mountain and 7 inches in the last 24 hours. It was a wintry Thanksgiving day in the high country, and with the clouds clearing, the mountain is looking great shrouded in a fresh blanket of white. This gives us a big boost toward next Friday’s target opening (12/5).
Of equal importance is a positive forecast for snowmaking heading into next week. The team was not about to let Mother Nature steal the whole show last night, and they were hard at work laying it down on Tumwater and Sunspot. Subfreezing temperatures are on the cards at the summit for most of the next week, and nightly lows will drop into the 20s at the Base Area as well, which should let the snowmaking team keep the pedal to the metal whenever possible.
Coverage is super solid on the upper mountain thanks to a strong base that the crew was able to put down over the last couple weeks, but it’s solid in appearance only on Mimi and a few of Tumwater’s lower pitches. Our famous light, dry powder certainly looks appetizing covering up those runs, but once it gets compacted by skiers and riders it won’t be sufficient to keep us off the ground below. With only around 1.5 days worth of viable snowmaking temps below Midway so far this November, the team’s gonna keep the hammer down to continue building that base. With a better forecast ahead, we’re optimistic that things are headed in the right direction.
