1:45pm Operations Update:Â
Due to continued high winds, Chair 2, Chair 3, and Chair 4 will remain closed for the rest of the day.
9:30am Conditions Update:Â
It is windy out there. Because of this, Chairs 2, 3 and 4 are on hold due to wind. Chair 1 and Mimi are open. Our patrollers are assessing additional terrain, which may open as conditions permit.
That being said, it is hard to beat a PNW March! We expect a few more inches of snowfall today, with most of the accumulation likely arriving after about 11 AM.
It was quite windy overnight, because of that I experienced variability in the fresh snow depth. Wind naturally redistributes snow across the mountain, stripping it from some areas and depositing it in others, so conditions may feel quite different from one slope to the next. Because of last night’s cooler temps at the higher elevations, the higher you go you go up the Mimi run, the softer the grooming becomes. The base area is a tad firm.
Speaking of grooming, yesterday afternoon’s heavier, wetter snow did us a huge favor. While it may not always be the lightest snow to ride, this type of snow is excellent for strengthening the base. Because it contains more moisture, it settles and packs together more easily. As the groomers work it into the existing surface, it helps create a stronger and more durable foundation for the days ahead.
Beneath the fresh snow there are still areas with thin cover and a firm base.
Take it easy as you explore, keep an eye out for variable conditions, and enjoy the fresh snow out there today!
We will continue to update throughout the day.
8:15am Operations Update:Â
Chair 3 will start the day on hold due to high winds, in addition to Chair 2 and Chair 4. 100Laps Rope Tow is also on hold as the parks crew digs out the features.
Chair 1, Ottobahn Carpet, and Pika Peak Rope Tow are scheduled for operation at this time.
We will continue to update throughout the day.
7:50am Operations Update:Â
Chair 4 will start the day on hold due to high winds, in addition to Chair 2. Assessment is ongoing on Chair 3. We will continue to update throughout the day.
As of now, Chair 1 and Chair 3 are scheduled for operation if conditions permit. However, there is a chance that wind impacts operations on all chairs today.
7:30am Operations Update:Â
We continue to see the forecasted sustained high winds across the mountain (into the 80mph range at the summit). Our current plan is to have Chairs 1, 3, 4, and all surface lifts scheduled for operation, conditions permitting. However, there is a chance that wind impacts operations on all chairs today. Terrain off of Chair 3 will be ungroomed. The grooming team was able to compact a couple of runs off of Chair 3 last night and this morning, and those runs are being covered with new snow. It is important to remember that all of this new snow is falling on top of very low base coverage. Chair 3 was closed yesterday and the day before due to low snow, and Chair 4 operated to the mid-unload only yesterday. Our team is out on the mountain, digging out from the storm and assessing conditions. Chairlifts and terrain will open as conditions permit today.
6:30am Conditions ReportÂ
High winds continued overnight and into this morning, bringing gusts into the 80s at the summit. The forecast is for these high winds to continue throughout the day, possibly diminishing in the afternoon. Chair 2 will start the day on hold due to wind. To start the day, Chair 1 will be open and Chair 4 will be open to mid-station only, along with all surface lifts. Our patrollers will be assessing additional terrain, which may open as conditions permit.
A big dump of new snowfall in the last 24 hours has The Ridge looking like a (windblown) wintry wonderland this morning. The summit stake is reading 12″, although this is likely a conservative estimate due to heavy wind affects blowing off several inches of snow during the day yesterday. Lower down, we’re seeing 11″ in Midway and the Base Area.
Powder will abound across the mountain today, with snow still coming down steadily and forecast to continue for a couple more hours. Snow during the day yesterday came down light and fluffy, before an evening warmup sent us toward very dense snow lower down (with a few raindrops hitting the Base Area for an hour or so). As the night progressed, temps dipped back down, giving us a “right-side up” snow consistency since 4pm last night, with lighter snow consistency on top. Across the mountain, but especially in the Upper Basin, winds have been high and sustained, majorly affecting the snowpack by scouring some spots while loading up others with some deep drifts.
There are gonna be some fantastic snow conditions out there today with the deepest conditions of the season so far, but keep in mind that this snow is falling atop a very thin snowpack. If additional terrain opens on natural snowpack only, bear in mind that beneath the fresh snow are numerous areas of extremely thin cover and firm base conditions. If Chair 3 opens, all open terrain will be on natural snowpack only, and it is probable that there will be no groomed way down. We know that the stoke factor is high with some deep new snowfall, but please continue to ride with caution and remember that an enticingly fresh surface may hide obstacles and variable conditions.
We will continue to provide updates if additional terrain opens, but keep in mind that limited terrain will be open to start the day.
We will see you on the mountain!
*Due to an issue with the summit weather instrumentation, our summit wind speed is not reporting accurately at this time. We are working with our partners at NWAC to resolve this issue.
