Closed Friday-Sunday 11/24-11/26

On this Thanksgiving Day we are thankful for this amazing place we get to come to play and for all of you who make up the Mission Ridge Community. We wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving! But we do have some less cheerful news as well. The weather system that rolled in on Monday brought with it warm temperatures and rain. This persisted through Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We were planning to re-open tomorrow with Chairs 1, 2 and the Pika Peak rope tow but this warm storm has set us back. We are certainly not back to square one with respect to the snowpack but too much snow was lost to be able to re-open as scheduled. We will be closed Friday-Sunday 11/24-26 and our targeted reopening date is December 1st conditions permitting. While we don’t get to ski and ride with you all this weekend we look forward to seeing you back at The Ridge soon! See you on the hill, -Tony

Update On Real Time Weather Data

Many of you may have noticed that earlier this month we lost communications between our weather stations and the Northwest Avalanche center found through the "Detailed hourly updates (NWAC)" link. The issue is on site at Mission and we are actively working with NWAC to resolve this situation. We rely on this system for many of our mountain operation functions and we also know that many people check and utilize this data daily. It is of the highest importance to us to get it fixed. We are currently manually observing temperature in the Base Area, at Midway and at the mountaintop patrol shack. Real time wind speed is also measured at the mountaintop patrol shack. These observations will be listed on our website whenever possible but updates may be infrequent, especially during non-operational days. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Sunday Preview

We are very excited to have started the 2017/18 season early and to have seen so many friends, both old and new, up on the mountain today! A brisk and beautiful bluebird day greeted the start of the new season and smiles and high fives were contagious. Early morning turns were quite literally a breath of fresh air and watching folks new to the sports enjoying their first mountain experience is always a joy. Ski and snowboard season is here and it truly is the best time of year! Chairs 1 and 2 are both scheduled for operation tomorrow but we did experience a mechanical set back on Chair 2 today that limited its operation. This situation does have the potential to keep Chair 2 out of operation tomorrow. If Chair 2 does not run tomorrow we will still open as scheduled from 9am to 4pm with Chair 1. Both Midway and the Hampton Lodge will be open, as well as all our other skier and rider services (Rentals, Retail, Ski School, Childcare). Please know that all of our crews are hard at work tonight as always to make sure your experience is the best it can possibly be. We look forward to another fun day on the hill! -Tony

Saturday 11/18 Forecast

Lets. Go. Skiing! We welcome you back to your winter home and the start of the 2017/18 season up at Mission Ridge. It is exciting to be opening early for the second time in four seasons and on or before Thanksgiving weekend for the third time in the last four years. It has been a great start to the month of November with good natural snowfall and some awesome snowmaking productivity as well. These conditions have come together to allow for limited early opening today and we want to emphasize that even though things are off to a good start, early season conditions do exist out there. Make sure, as always, to ski and ride with care and easy style your way back into winter condition. See you on the hill, -Tony

Friday 11am Update

And the word on an early opening day is… We have operational permits in hand from Washington State Parks and the US Forest Service and are so close to being able to open. But we have to ask you to hang in there with us a bit longer. We will not be able to make the official call on tomorrow's early opening until this afternoon. By 5pm we hope to announce that we will be opening for the season early on Saturday and Sunday 11/18-11/19 from 9am to 4pm. If we open tomorrow we will have Chairs 1 and 2 scheduled for operation and Sunspot, Tumwater, and Mimi scheduled to be open and groomed. There is still a chance that opening this weekend will not come together. In that case we will be excited to open for the 2017/18 season as scheduled on Friday 11/24. We know everyone is as excited as we are to get out and hit the slopes and we have really appreciated everyone’s understanding and patience as we have been working towards this early opening to the season. The Mission Ridge community is the best and we can’t wait to welcome you back for another great season. See you on the hill, -Tony

When is opening day?

To cut straight to the chase... Conditions are looking good and we are planning to start the 2017/18 season this Saturday, November 18th with a limited opening of Chairs 1 and 2 pending the arrival of permits from Washington State Parks and L&I. If things don’t line up for an opening on the 18th we will be excited to open for the season on Friday, November 24th. All the details… At Mission Ridge we always target the Friday after Thanksgiving for our “Scheduled Opening Day”. This date is identified in advance of the season with no certainty of what conditions will be when November rolls around. Even though the target is acquired before long term forecasts are compiled, over 50 years of experience tells us that this is a good bet. 7 out of the last 10 seasons The Ridge has been able to open on or before Thanksgiving weekend. On at least two of those opening days Mission was the first in the state to open. But what does all this mean for the first day of this season? Early November conditions on the mountain have come together from both a snowmaking and natural snowfall standpoint to make an early opening on Saturday the 18th a possibility. Our crews out on the mountain, in the lodges, and in the Base Area have been working extremely hard and their effort is certainly noticeable. A ton of work has been accomplished this offseason and we are excited to welcome you up to the mountain to experience these upgrades for yourself! On Wednesday, November 18th our crews finalized a successful inspection of the upgrades to Chair 1 and now we are awaiting the arrival of operational permit. We want to thank Washington State Parks and the US Forest Service for being such supportive partners in recreation with us! Whether the 18th or 24th is the day, we will begin the 2017/18 season as soon as we have this permit in hand. We will make the announcement as soon as we possibly can.
